Stunning Poll Reveals America's Grim Outlook: Two-Thirds Say Nation is Crumbling, and They Know Exactly Who to Blame

A staggering new poll has painted a bleak picture of the American mood, revealing a nation gripped by anxiety and deep-seated dissatisfaction with its political leadership. The bombshell report from ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos shows that an overwhelming majority of Americans—a full two-thirds—believe the country is "pretty seriously off on the wrong track."
This widespread pessimism isn't just a vague feeling; it's tied directly to kitchen-table issues and the man in the Oval Office. A slim majority reported that their personal economic situation has worsened since President Donald Trump took office, with a significant portion pointing the finger at the administration for rising inflation. This sentiment suggests that the president's economic promises are ringing hollow for a large swath of the populace.
The discontent cuts across the political spectrum, but the partisan divide is stark. A near-unanimous 95% of Democrats feel the country is headed in the wrong direction, a view shared by a commanding 77% of independents. While Republicans are more optimistic, a notable 29% of the president's own party members also agree that the nation is on the wrong path.
However, the poll reveals a deeper crisis of confidence that implicates the entire political establishment. When asked about who is in touch with the concerns of ordinary people, the results were damning for everyone in Washington. While over six in ten Americans feel that President Trump and the Republican Party are out of touch, an even larger majority holds the same view of the Democratic Party. This signals a profound disconnect between the governed and those who govern, with most Americans feeling ignored by both sides of the aisle.
The sentiment of alienation is particularly strong among minority communities. An overwhelming 87% of Black Americans, alongside 71% of both Hispanic and Asian Americans, believe the country is on the wrong track, compared to 61% of white Americans. This data highlights the different realities experienced by various demographic groups under the current administration.
Adding to the national anxiety is the ongoing government shutdown, with a majority expressing growing concern over its impact. The poll makes one thing crystal clear: Americans are unhappy, worried about their finances, and have lost faith in their leaders to steer the ship of state in the right direction.
